The history of Tjörn

Fish processing and train-oil factories were set up everywhere on Tjörn's archipelago islands. Herring processing still flourishes on Klädesholmen, which accounts for 40 per cent of the country's pickled herring production.

Freighting started in the 1840s. Schooners and cutters shipped salt, dried fish, wood, oil and other goods to nearby ports in Skagerrack, Kattegatt and the Baltic Sea. Today cargoes of, among other things, cars and trucks are shipped out from Vallhamn to destinations worldwide.

Remnants of our past can be found all over the place on Tjörn, from bronze-age rock carvings to the remains of the fire at Margareta Huitfeldt's Sundsby.
