Life on Tjörn feels secure and inspiring, an island of opportunity.
There is accommodation available no matter where you find yourself in life, from houses to rental flats and owner-occupier flats. Tjörn municipality exercises active community planning in dialogue with the inhabitants. The basic principles and values the island stands for, also known as Cultural planning, are in the forefront when, during 2010, anew structure plan for Tjörn is being developed.
Healthcare and services
Community service is close at hand on Tjörn. There are two local healthcare centres, a pharmacy, several banks and some of the most well-reputed provisions stores on the coast.
Education
The 3 200 children and young people living on Tjörn attend its many nurseries, schools, and upper-secondary schools, or upper-secondary schools close by. Billströmska Folkhögskolan, which was founded in 1876, receives students from all over the world. Several adult education associations are active in the municipality. The music societies are an excellent complement to the municipal school of culture.
The elderly
There are several old-people's homes on Tjörn, a number of which are either new or recently renovated. They are all of a high standard and accommodate the needs and requests of the occupants. We also have modern accommodation to cater for the needs of disabled people.
Public transport and traffic
Bus connections to the south via Stenungsund to Kungälv and Göteborg run every hour from, for example, the square in Skärhamn. The Tjörn bridge road link, which connects Tjörn to the mainland, celebrates 50 years of service in the summer of 2010. Traffic can be heavy over these bridges during the summer months.
