Pär Lagerkvist (Nobel Prize in Literature 1951) wrote some of his finest verse and Karl Nordström painted several of his landscapes and portraits here on Tjörn. With its special light and inspiring artistic landscape, the island still today appeals to writers and painters, who choose to live and work here. There are many museums on Tjörn. The Nordic Watercolour Museum, which opened in 2000, is the largest of them and has been nominated Sweden's Museum of the Year 2010. Tens of thousands of people come to see its unique exhibitions every year. Emil Nolde, Anders Zorn, Ivar Arosenius, Sol LeWitt and Elsa Beskow are among those whose work has been shown.
